THE FOUNDER

Breakout Aquatics was founded by Zach Smith, a Northern Virginia native whose experience spans competitive swimming, coaching, and application development.

Zach began swimming competitively at just four years old and went on to compete for the Pleasant Valley Piranhas, Potomac Marlins, and Westfield Bulldogs. After 14 years as a competitive swimmer, he transitioned into coaching, progressing from working with the youngest swimmers to taking on broader coaching and team leadership responsibilities.

After earning his degree in Application Development from Marshall University, Zach returned to Northern Virginia and rejoined the Potomac Marlins as a coach. Today, he serves as a Lead Site Coordinator, coaching athletes while helping oversee the day-to-day coordination of practices at his site.

It was through that combination of coaching and development experience that Zach saw an opportunity to solve a problem familiar to swim teams everywhere: too many spreadsheets and disconnected processes.

Rosters, lane assignments, practices, and attendance shouldn't require a collection of documents that constantly need to be updated and shared. So Zach began building the solution he wanted on his own pool deck.

That solution became Breakout Aquatics, software designed around the way swim teams actually operate.
